field collecting

Collecting rocks and minerals is a fun and refreshing hobby.Rocks are the nature of the earth.Minerals are the building blocks of rocks. All rocks are made up of one or more minerals. There are three basic rock classes igneous, sedimentary and metamorphic. Each class has different divisions.A good field guide book will describe these and is a good tool when out collecting.

Where to go collecting? This is one of the questions that always comes up over and over again from the new members of this hobby. It seems we do not see the obvious at times?Rocks are all over! You can start right in your backyard at times. There are however some better places to look then others.Quarries and mines are a great place to search for rocks and minerals. Both old quarries and mines and working quarries and mines offer great areas to collect at.Roadcuts and construction sites.Anywhere that rock has been moved or broken up also is a good places to look.Along rivers and streams where the water has cut through the rock.Cliff faces on hills and mountains.Bluffs, open plains and glacial boulders.Anywhere that rocks are exposed offer a place to collect at.

locally we have a trap rock quarry which contains pockets with Herkimer Diamonds in it.This rock is used to line the drainage ditches along highways,as gravel for driveways and parking lots and under bridges as an erosion control.I have found Herkimer Diamonds at these places.

In another case a shopping mall was being build. The construction company had to blast and remove rock for the drainage and sewage systems. The were many fine mineral specimens found in the exposed rock face and broken up rocks.Emeralds were actually found at this site!

There are fee collecting sites. These are great places to collect and you will almost always get what you are looking for at these.Locally we have several sites for Herkimer Diamonds.

So rocks can be found if you look around.Go ahead and check it out.

We have a place here in Idaho on the Salmon River where after the spring run-off, you go down to the sand bar and find garnets galore. They are mostly octagon shape and not very clear. Once in awhile you find one worth making something out of. They are fun to collect regardless. I also know of some opal mines in the deserts of Southern Idaho. I am dying to go back and poke around but gas is so expensive right now. OUCH!

That sounds like a fun collecting area.I find kids are always interested in rocks and crystals.I carry some crystals around when I go out collecting and give them away to any children I see during the trip.Always are pleased!Sorry for not responding quicker I have been off line for months.
